Hot Water System Upgrade

10m3 Hourly Water Savings Resulting in 2.5 GWh Per Annum Energy Savings

Problem

DETA undertook a level 2 energy audit at Alliance's Pukeuri site. It was identified that, like several other Alliance sites, the hot water usage on the slaughterboard was higher than necessary.

Solution

We developed a project to reduce the flow of the sterilisers and as part of this, we also included flow metering so that the hot water consumption could be managed and monitored. With our previous experience there was high confidence on the success of the project.

Outcome

The confidence we had in the project was found to be well placed. The hot water usage dropped significantly (10 m³/hr) during processing while still meeting Alliance’s internal requirements. The energy savings were in the realm of 2.5 GWh a year. A great success.
